Introduction of ISO 9001

ISO 9001 is generic quality system of standards which is applicable to almost all sectors, It may be Education services , Medical services, Engineering services, Manufacturing services, etc. ISO 9000 was first introduced in 1987 and revised in 1994 then came as ISO 9001 in 2000 and latest revised edition is 2008.

Objectives of ISO 9001

  • It emphasis on process improvement rather to improvement in results.
  • It serves as the Constitution for an oraganization by use of that Management can build a strong Quality Management  System in the organization.
  • It creates the opportunities to improve the process by proper documentation and implementation of documented procedure.  
  • It makes the management more responsible towards the benefits of organization and the customers linked with the organization by quality policy, customer focus, planning and management review.
  • It ensures the best utilization of available resources like infrastructure, human resource, work environment.
  • It control all the product related processes like design and development, measuring equipment related to the product, verification and validation of the product and other customer related issues regarding the product.
  • It control all the inspection procedures by measurement analysis and improvement system. It may be Internal audit, analysis of data , control of non-conforming product, continual improvement, corrective and preventive action etc.
  • It builds the customers confidence in the organization.
In short we cannot assume a better quality management system without implementation of ISO 9001 in any organization whether it is Manufacturing or Service Industry

Thank you for this great post.
At Statistics Netherlands we concluded that ISO 9001 was not the appropriate standard for our business (producing statistics), although we acknowlegde the great value of this standard.
Therefore, we developed an even more generic quality management model called OQRM. This model can be used in any organistion, at any level, at any scale and any field of expertise. Also quality management and risk management are integrated. One of the starting principles of the model is, that the quality of the product is dependent on the quality of many other components of the organisation like the process, the people, the IT, etc.
